The best way to handle a Car Overboard is through PREVENTION. The Captain is ultimately responsible for ensuring that each vehicle has come to a stop, shut the engine off, and set the break. The Deckhand also holds a certain amount of responsibility as the last line of defense to ensure this has been done as they go around and collect.

  1. Get there attention, we need “snap them out of it,” but also want them to remain Calm. The car     will likely float anywhere from 30-120 seconds. They need to act quickly but there is time               Communicate S.W.O.C.

a) Seatbelts off

b) Windows down

c) Out of the car

d) Children first, preferably older children who can help with the younger

  1. During this time, the deckhand should be throwing any flotation equipment to the vehicle to

help the passengers and mark the area.

  1. In the event the windows wont go down, instruct them to either kick at the TOP of their      window, or remove their headrest and strike the TOP of their window with the metal rods

  2. They should NOT:

a) open the doors, this is difficult and will make the car sink faster.

b) try to break the from windshield, this is the strongest, thickest glass

c) wait for water to fill the car so pressure equalizes. Pressure equalization sometimes takes up to two minutes after the car has filled.

  1. YOU should NOT: Enter the water. Nothing in Balboa Island Ferry’s Car Overboard response encourages or recommends you enter the water to assist with the rescue effort. It is outside the scope of your training.
