Below are our strategies for driving in dense fog conditions:
- There is no need to rush in these conditions. We get there when we get there
- In Foggy conditions we should use our horn on every departure, even when traffic is light.
- When fog is so thick that you can’t see one side from the other, both Ferries in service should NEVER DEPART AND CROSS AT THE SAME TIME. Instead, follow this strategy:
- Whichever Ferry is ready to depart will sound their horn and exit the slip.
- The other Ferry will remain in the slip until both Captains have visual of each others Ferries, then the second Ferry will depart the slip.
- Deckhands should collect all fares before a Ferry departs so they can act as lookout. (This is a new addition, but it will help improve safety exponentially).
- Even when visibility improves we still need to continue using our horns and collectors should continue to help keep an eye out (although collecting in the slip is no longer necessary).
- Your compass is your friend. Make sure your not placing a phone or anything else nearby it that could effect it!
- Captain’s may use GPS apps like Waze or Google Maps, but must really on them so much that they aren’t focusing on their surroundings. Captain’s should also avoid Deviation of their compass by placing their phone nearby.
It is imperative that we run a safe operation in all conditions. Please follow these procedures to ensure this remains a safe environment for yourself, your crew, and your passengers.
